At the end of April, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) published Ordinance 1,271 with the dates of the sanitary gap periods and the soybean sowing calendar for the 2025\/26 harvest for Brazil. In Paran\u00e1, since the 2023\/24 harvest, the state has been segmented into three regions, with different periods for sanitary gap and sowing (check the periods in the infographic below).<\/p>\n

The sanitary break includes a period of 90 consecutive days, during which it is forbidden to keep live plants of the oilseed in the field. The measure aims to combat Asian rust, a disease caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, which can compromise soybean production by up to 90%. Without live plants in the field, the life cycle of the fungus is interrupted, reducing the incidence of the disease.<\/p>\n

In November 2024, the FAEP System held a technical forum with the aim of discussing the scheduling of the sanitary gap and soybean sowing in Paran\u00e1 with rural producers and cooperatives.<\/p>\n

The event was held in partnership with the Paran\u00e1 Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapar), the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (Seab), the Ocepar System and the MAPA. \u201cIn this forum, the producing class and the control bodies established, by consensus, the dates, always guided by scientific research, but without forgetting the productive particularities of each region of Paran\u00e1\u201d \u00c1gide Eduardo Meneguette, interim president of the FAEP System.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proposal agreed upon in this forum is already included in this MAPA ordinance. All of these periods and regions for rust control were approved by Adapar, which is the agency responsible for forwarding the annual suggestion to MAPA. The research suggests that, during this 90-day period, there cannot be any living soybean plants. This means that there are fewer inoculums of the disease. The sowing calendar, around 120 days, aims to reduce the number of fungicide applications to delay the pest\u2019s resistance,\u201d explains Ana Paula Kowalski, technician at the Technical and Economic Department (DTE) of the FAEP System.<\/p>\n

Adapar is responsible for monitoring compliance with the sanitary break periods and soybean planting. In addition to compromising crop health, farmers who fail to comply with the established dates may be fined by the regulatory body.<\/p>\n
