Regenerative livestock farming can be a central piece in the global climate solution. Brazilian agriculture, with its unique potential, has the capacity to capture more carbon than it emits, contributing to the fight against climate change and food insecurity. These ideas were defended by Gilberto Tomazoni, global CEO of JBS, during a panel at the Bloomberg Green event held on Tuesday morning (04), in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n
The role of livestock farming will be highlighted at COP30. Case studies from the sector are among the proposals that will be presented at the meeting in Bel\u00e9m by SB COP, a global alliance coordinated by the CNI (National Confederation of Industry), which seeks to articulate business participation in the climate agenda. Tomazoni leads the global working group on food systems.<\/p>\n
For the Global CEO of JBS, COP30 represents a unique opportunity for Brazil to show that tropical agriculture and regenerative livestock farming are part of the solution to the climate issue. "We are bringing suggestions from the private sector to advance carbon-capturing production, with appropriate measurement mechanisms, increased productivity focused on small and medium-sized producers, and unlocking long-term financing for a just transition," he emphasized.<\/p>\n
Tomazoni advocated for integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems (ILPF) as an essential path to environmental and economic benefits. Studies indicate that well-managed farms capture more carbon than they emit, and that agriculture can absorb up to 26% of global emissions.<\/p>\n
In Brazil, proper pasture management has been recovering degraded soils. Several regions of the country are advancing to up to three harvests per year. All this without the need to expand areas, which saves the forests. \u201cThere are large farms that already capture more carbon than they emit. Now we need to replicate these good practices among small producers, offering technical assistance and accessible financing lines. It's not just about productivity, but also about inclusion,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n
The executive also mentioned that JBS is part of the coalition led by the Government of Par\u00e1, alongside the Carrefour retail chain, the NGO The Nature Conservancy, and other local industries in the Sustainable Livestock Program, which provides for the individual traceability of the state's herd. This Monday, the 3rd, Atacad\u00e3o stores in the state began selling the first batch of traceable 100% meat produced in Par\u00e1, in JBS units.<\/p>\n
Tomazoni emphasized that the biggest challenge lies with small producers. Therefore, one of JBS's main investments in recent years has been dedicated to them. "Since 2021, our Green Offices have already assisted more than 20,000 properties with free technical assistance, environmental regularization, and technological inclusion. We need to help small and medium-sized producers so that the entire chain is organized in a way that increases productivity with carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation," he stated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
