The capital of Par\u00e1 - Bel\u00e9m - hosts the Climate Summit this Thursday (06) and Friday (07). The event has the participation of 57 heads of state and government and is a kind of opening act for COP 30, which will take place next week, between November 10 and 21. Topics under discussion include climate and nature, energy transition and the different impacts of climate tragedies on humanity. The poorer and more vulnerable the populations, the worse the consequences.<\/p>\n
Brazil's Environment Minister, Marina Silva, states that the world needs to seek new sources of funding for those who most preserve the environment. Reducing social inequalities is also an important way to confront the impacts of climate change. And, as President Lula affirms, in addition to the obligation of rich countries to finance the protection of the planet, it is also possible to make preservation an investment. This is the aim of the Brazilian proposal to create a Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF).<\/p>\n
\u201cI participated in COP 15 in 2009 in Copenhagen. At that COP, the rich world promised 100 billion dollars a year to help countries that have standing forests. To this day, that money hasn't been released. Now, the debt is already 1 trillion and 300 billion dollars. If they didn't give 100 billion, are they going to give 1 trillion?\u201d said Lula. \u201cWhat is the big news from this COP? It's that we created the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, the TFFF. It won't be a donation, it will be an investment. A pension fund can invest, a businessman can invest, a government can invest,\u201d explained the Brazilian president.<\/p>\n
