That is, the Brazilian Forest Code will be the benchmark for them to make environmental demands in our country. This is a victory, an achievement for the State of Mato Grosso, because here we had some requirements that were causing harm to our producers, creating a rule far above what Brazilian law establishes,” declared Mendes, according to the state's Secretariat of Communication. “In the Amazon biome, landowners can only use 20% of the area, being obliged to preserve the remaining 80%. Most producers support the application of the law, recognizing that illegal deforestation harms the environment, the image of the country and the state, and negatively impacts agribusiness,” added the governor.

The Mato Grosso Soybean and Corn Producers Association (Aprosoja MT) had already issued a statement in favor of the validity of the state law, which was even regulated by a decree from the Mato Grosso government. The organization reported having structured its own monitoring, analysis, and evidence-gathering process regarding companies that make demands based on the Soybean Moratorium, in order to report them to the state government and request an end to the eventual granting of tax benefits.

Environmentalists criticize

The decision by Abiove was criticized by environmental organizations that are part of the Soy Moratorium, such as Greenpeace Brazil. “What ended on January 1st were tax benefits in Mato Grosso. By announcing its withdrawal from the agreement, Abiove and its associates chose to relinquish a commitment that helped reduce deforestation in the Amazon in exchange for preserving their tax benefits. It's a business decision, not a legal requirement. No rule, legal determination, or judicial imposition obliges companies to abandon the Soy Moratorium,” argues Rômulo Batista, campaign coordinator for Greenpeace Brazil.

Since its signing, compliance with the agreement has been closely monitored by environmental organizations through satellite tracking. Data presented by Greenpeace Brazil, for example, shows an increase of 344% in soybean production in the Amazon between 2009 and 2022, while in the same period there was a decrease of 69% in deforestation of the biome, indicating increased productivity without territorial expansion. “Maintaining the Moratorium would mean being consistent with promises made to investors and international markets. Withdrawing means assuming the environmental and reputational risk and delivering to consumers soybeans linked to post-2008 deforestation,” adds Batista.

Photo: Disclosure/OP Rural

A preliminary study by the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) indicates that the end of the Soy Moratorium could increase deforestation in the Amazon by up to 30% by 2045, with a direct impact on Brazil's climate goals, known as NDCs, and deforestation targets.

In a statement, Abiove affirmed that the Soy Moratorium, despite being a mechanism already in effect, fulfilled a historic role and leaves a legacy that consolidated Brazil as a global reference in sustainable production. “It is fundamental to highlight that the Supreme Federal Court recognized the legality of the pact. Furthermore, even as a voluntary mechanism, the Moratorium was widely recognized by the Federal Government as a fundamental part of its public policy for environmental preservation in the Amazon biome and celebrated due to its unequivocal positive results. Abiove trusts that the legislation will serve to ensure the continuity of public policies for preservation and control of deforestation, combined with the guidelines of the recently approved CONAMA Resolution No. 510/2025, which established the minimum validity requirements for authorizations for vegetation suppression, as well as the Brazilian Forest Code, provisions that ensure that Brazilian soy maintains its high socio-environmental standards,” the entity stated in a note.

The association also cited the need for legal certainty and stated its commitment to continuing to ensure access for Brazilian soybeans and their byproducts to the international market. “The legacy of monitoring and the expertise acquired over almost 20 years will not be lost. There will be individual attention given to the rigorous demands of global markets, with equal confidence in the Brazilian authorities for the full implementation of a new regulatory framework, so that the international commitments undertaken by Brazil are preserved, as well as the security and credibility of the Brazilian product in its consumer markets, as the Soybean Moratorium has achieved in these almost 20 years,” concluded Abiove.

THE Bela Cereais works with the best grains on the market and also keeps you up to date with the latest news and analyses on agribusiness.
Don't forget to follow our social networks.

Access News Source

A Associação Brasileira das Indústrias de Óleos Vegetais (Abiove) anunciou nesta segunda-feira (5) a saída…

[259

post-26527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-soja
["GET
