The Gross Value of Production (VBP) of Maranh\u00e3o ended the 2025 cycle with a revenue of R$ 17,972.23 million. The result points to a solid recovery of 10.56% compared to the R$ 16,255 million registered in 2024. However, local growth is occurring at a slower pace than the national dynamic: while Brazil saw its VBP jump 15.2% in the same period (from R$ 1.22 trillion to R$ 1.41 trillion), Maranh\u00e3o lost relative ground, reaffirming its position as the 13th in agricultural VBP among the federative units.<\/p>\n
Maranh\u00e3o's share of Brazil's Gross Production Value (VBP) is only 1.27%. Although the state shows a recovery trajectory after the sharp drop seen in 2023 (R$ 16.6 billion), it cannot keep pace with the growth of the major producing states. Mato Grosso, the leader in the ranking, earns R$ 220.4 billion \u2014 an amount twelve times greater than Maranh\u00e3o's. In practice, the state operates in an "island" of low representativeness, where the nominal growth of R$ 1.7 billion in one year is not enough to change its relevance in the country's macroeconomic scenario.<\/p>\n

The composition of Maranh\u00e3o's agricultural sector is largely dominated by crops, which account for 76% (R$ 13.7 billion) of revenue, while livestock farming holds 24% (R$ 4.2 billion).<\/p>\n

The historical graph (2018\u20132025) reveals that Maranh\u00e3o is experiencing a \u201cwalking\u201d pattern: after accelerated growth between 2019 and 2022, when it reached a peak of R$ 18.4 billion, the state suffered two years of contraction (2023 and 2024). The 2025 result marks the end of the downward trend, but still places the state below the record level of three years ago. This indicates that current growth is mostly nominal, reflecting a recovery in prices or specific areas, and not necessarily a structural expansion of the productive base.<\/p>\n
Data indicates that agribusiness in Maranh\u00e3o faces a severe dependence on a "three-legged stool" composed of soybeans, cattle, and corn, which together account for R$ 15.4 billion, or 86% of the entire state's VBP (Value of Agricultural Production). The weakness lies in the decline of subsistence and domestic market crops, such as beans and cassava, in addition to the drop in sugarcane production. With the lowest national share (1.27%), the state remains vulnerable to fluctuations in global commodity prices, lacking a strong enough base for agricultural diversification or animal protein industrialization (chickens and pigs) to raise its standing in the Brazilian ranking.<\/p>\n
