Rio Grande do Sul has decided to extend, on an exceptional basis, the deadline for planting soybeans until February 15. The measure was communicated last Wednesday (14) by the Department of Plant Defense of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (DDV\/Seapi) to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and seeks to offer an alternative to producers impacted by adverse weather conditions and the delay in corn cultivation in the State.<\/p>\n

According to the official MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) calendar for the 2025\/2026 crop season, soybean planting is authorized between October 1, 2025, and January 28, 2026, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Program for the Control of Asian Soybean Rust. The extension of the deadline in Rio Grande do Sul does not alter this national rule, but allows for specific exceptions with authorization from SEAPI (State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply).<\/p>\n

The decision was primarily motivated by the impacts of the climate on the agricultural calendar. According to the document sent to the Ministry of Agriculture, the excessive rainfall recorded in December 2025 and January 2026 compromised the progress of corn planting in several regions, which tends to delay the harvest of the crop and, consequently, the planting of soybeans in succession areas. "It is a relevant alternative for the producer who truly needs this extra time," stated the Secretary of Agriculture, Edivilson Brum, highlighting that the measure seeks to provide predictability and reduce losses in an adverse scenario.<\/p>\n

The director of the Department of Plant Protection, Ricardo Felicetti, emphasizes that the extension applies to specific situations. "These cases justify extending the planting deadline in specific situations, especially in soybean crops following corn, a strategic crop for the state," he notes.<\/p>\n

Soybeans are one of the mainstays of the agricultural economy in Rio Grande do Sul, and delays in planting can have direct repercussions on productivity, costs, and producer income. At the same time, controlling the planting schedule is considered an essential tool in combating Asian soybean rust, one of the most severe diseases affecting the crop.<\/p>\n
