Corn prices fell throughout January on both the Chicago Board of Trade and the Brazilian market, reflecting high production, comfortable stocks, and the progress of the harvest. This information comes from Ita\u00fa BBA Agro Consulting.<\/p>\n
In Chicago, after four consecutive months of increases, the grain ended January with a devaluation of 2%, quoted at US$ 4.32 per bushel. Despite US export figures exceeding expectations, record production keeps the supply and demand balance in a comfortable situation. At the beginning of February, the downward trend continued, with a further decline of 1%, bringing the price to US$ 4.28 per bushel.<\/p>\n
In Brazil, the scenario was also one of retraction. In Sorriso (MT), the price fell 1% in January, to R$ 51 per sack. According to data from Agro Ita\u00fa BBA Consulting, in addition to the drop in Chicago and the appreciation of the real, the progress of the soybean harvest increased the producer's willingness to negotiate. The high volume of carryover stocks, a result of the 2024\/25 crop, and the beginning of the first corn harvest also contributed to putting pressure on prices. In the first half of February, the decline intensified, with a drop of 7.8%, bringing the price in Sorriso to R$ 47.20 per sack.<\/p>\n
The planting of the second corn crop has already begun and is slightly behind the average of the last five years, although it is more advanced than at the same time last year. To date, approximately 221 TP4T of the projected area has been sown, compared to the historical average of 25.51 TP4T. Mato Grosso leads the work, with 371 TP4T of the area planted.<\/p>\n
The expectation is that most of the crop will be sown within the ideal window. Excessive rainfall prevented greater progress in January, concentrating approximately 70% of planting in February. Therefore, the critical phase for the crops should occur mainly between April and May, increasing the dependence on rainfall during this period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
