The planting of the 2025\/26 corn crop continues to advance throughout the state, but has not yet reached the total area estimated for the crop, even with a delay of more than 20 days compared to the ideal planting date. This situation reflects the delay in soybean planting in November 2025, due to lack of rain, and subsequently the delay in harvesting the grain due to excessive rain. Data from Aproclima, a project of the Mato Grosso Soybean and Corn Producers Association (Aprosoja MT) that monitors the state's weather conditions, identified an accumulation of up to 900 millimeters of rain in some municipalities in just 60 days.<\/p>\n
\nTo date, Mato Grosso has reached 93,68% of the area planned for corn sowing, according to data from the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea), published last Friday (March 6). The delay worries rural producers who need to follow the schedule to have a productive and high-quality harvest.<\/p>\n
\nIn addition to harming planting, the large amount of rain also harms producers who have already managed to sow corn, as the runoff can cause problems in the stands, as explained by the financial director of Aprosoja MT, Nathan Belusso.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cCorn is a much more technical crop than soybeans; it uses fewer plants per linear meter, fewer plants per hectare, and consequently, you can have a loss of plants, a loss of the stand population. As a result, it generates a direct effect on the final production of the crop, so we have to pay attention to the development of corn planting, especially in these regions that are more delayed, that are suffering from a lot of rain now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\nAlong the same lines, the vice-president of Aprosoja MT for the southern region, Laura Battisti Nardes, also highlighted that excessive rainfall can cause financial losses for farmers, as it may damage the grains.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAs with any crop, both excessive rain and sun affect the quantity and quality of production. In the case of corn, a more sensitive crop than soybeans, excess water during germination, growth, and flowering causes greater damage than drought, affecting grain quality and consequently reducing the economic viability of the product,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
\nAproclima monitored rainfall for 60 days, from December 25, 2025 to February 25, 2026, and identified accumulations of 700 to 900 mm of rain in the specific municipalities of Diamantino, Nova Mutum, Vera, Sinop, Cl\u00e1udia, Matup\u00e1, and Quer\u00eancia. In other areas of the state, meteorological data indicated accumulations of 150 to 500 millimeters of rain. The rainfall prevents machinery from entering planting areas due to the risk of soil compaction and degradation. Therefore, farmers are waiting for better weather conditions.<\/p>\n
\nWith the large amount of rain at the beginning of planting and the delay in sowing, the farmer from Nova Ubirat\u00e3, F\u00e1bio Luis Bratz, said that he is worried about the weather conditions in the coming months, while the corn is flowering.<\/p>\n
\n"The rain delayed the soybean harvest; it rained a lot here in the region, and then we harvested the soybeans, but our biggest concern is the lack of rain later on, at the end of the cycle. The rain may stop earlier, and then the corn won't have time to express its full productive potential," he reported.<\/p>\n
\nBratz states that the corn is being planted outside the ideal window on his property. The farmer explains that he will finish planting and will continue hoping that the rains remain normal throughout the corn growing season.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe corn is already being planted outside the optimal window. We've already planted late, in fact, we're planting late, and the problem is that we might not be able to produce anything. The seed is there, the fertilizer too, we have to plant, there's no way around it. We'll see later if we can produce enough to at least pay for this,\u201d he laments.<\/p>\n
\nThe downpour could wash away the dreams of those who planned all year for a good harvest and were surprised by the excessive rain. Beyond the fields, this adverse weather could also compromise an entire chain involving thousands of families working in the sector.
