La Ni\u00f1a is expected to weaken in the coming months, paving the way for a possible transition to El Ni\u00f1o conditions between April and June. This is according to...\u00a0Quarterly Bulletin of the Permanent Council of Applied Agrometeorology of Rio Grande do Sul (Copaaergs)<\/a>, coordinated by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi), based on a statistical model from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The probability of a shift to neutrality and, subsequently, El Ni\u00f1o reaches 84.6% in the quarter.<\/p>\n

According to the document, April is expected to have irregular rainfall, near or slightly below average in most of the state, with above-average precipitation only in restricted areas. For May and June, the trend is for rainfall near or slightly above average. Temperatures are expected to vary, with warm periods interspersed with incursions of cold air masses, and there may be anomalies ranging from normal to slightly above average.<\/p>\n

The bulletin, prepared quarterly by agrometeorology experts from ten state and federal entities linked to agriculture and climate, also provides technical recommendations for the period.<\/p>\n

During the summer harvest, producers should harvest and store the grains as soon as they reach maturity, maintain soil cover, and properly prepare rice fields for the next crop, considering the forecast of above-average rainfall. For winter crops, it is recommended to stagger sowing, choose disease-resistant cultivars, and avoid planting in waterlogged soils or soils with a history of cereal mosaic virus, in addition to planning protection against Fusarium head blight.<\/p>\n

In the forage sector, the bulletin highlights the importance of starting the sowing of winter forage crops early, whenever there is adequate moisture, avoiding waterlogged soil management and urea application before heavy rains. It also recommends reducing animal stocking rates in natural pastures, deferring cultivated or improved paddocks to allow for forage recovery, and prioritizing quality areas for calves, heifers, and pregnant females. Integrated systems such as Crop-Livestock Integration are indicated for finishing steers, aiming for sustainable productivity.<\/p>\n

Although autumn has milder temperatures than summer, heat waves can occur, requiring attention to shade management, ventilation, feeding, and frequent monitoring of the herd to minimize economic losses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
