Of the total number of animals, 29 were born alive and four were stillborn, a number far exceeding the average for the industry, which is around 16 piglets per litter in commercial systems. The producer herself reported surprise at the result, since the farm's best previous rates ranged between 25 and 26 piglets per gestation.<\/p>\n
The incident required immediate action from the farm's team to ensure the animals' survival. Since a sow typically has between 12 and 18 teats, some of the piglets had to be transferred to another lactating sow, a common practice in pig farming to ensure adequate nutrition and reduce risks in the first few days of life.<\/p>\n
