A record harvest is synonymous with a good year for the producer. That's what intuition tells you to think, and that's exactly what the August numbers contradict.<\/p>\n

In the same two weeks, two federal agencies published data pointing in opposite directions. The National Supply Company (Conab) concluded its 11th Grain Crop Survey with an estimated production of 360.8 million tons for the 2025\/26 cycle, an increase of 2.41 TP4T over the previous season, equivalent to 8.5 million tons more.\n<\/p>\n

The cultivated area reached 83.5 million hectares, an expansion of 2.11 TP4T, and the average productivity was 4,322 kilograms per hectare, close to that of last year.<\/p>\n

A few days later, the Secretariat of Agricultural Policy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) reduced its projection for the Gross Value of Agricultural Production in 2026 to R$ 1.398 trillion. In the previous bulletin, the estimate was R$ 1.404 trillion. The ministry also revised the 2025 base downwards, from R$ 1.477 trillion to R$ 1.464 trillion.<\/p>\n

Let's compare the two extremes. Between 2025 and 2026, gross revenue at the farm gate shrinks by R$$ 66 billion, a drop of R$4.5%. In the same period, the country harvests 8.5 million tons more of grains.<\/p>\n

The VBP (Gross Value of Production) cut is concentrated in crops. The gross value of agricultural production was projected at R$ 893.331 billion, a decrease of 6% compared to 2025, while livestock was projected at R$ 504.866 billion, a milder decrease of 1.7%. Crops account for 64% of the total, livestock for the remaining 36%.\n<\/p>\n

Opened up by culture, the picture becomes clearer. A soy<\/a>The largest individual chain in the country remained virtually stable at R$ 336.028 billion. corn<\/a> It was projected at R$ 158.408 billion, a decrease of 6.6%. A sugarcane<\/a> The total for R$ was 108.746 billion, a decrease of 8.8%, and coffee reached R$ 103.471 billion, a decrease of 11.6%. cotton<\/a> It fell 5.7%, to R$ 34.252 billion.<\/p>\n

At the tips of the feet, the falls are much harder. orange<\/a> It fell 41.8%, to R$ 14.466 billion. The wheat<\/a> It lost 25.4% and ended up at R$ 7.929 billion. Cocoa plummeted 57%, leaving R$ 5.074 billion in projected gross revenue.<\/p>\n

Among the crops monitored by the ministry, growth is seen in only five: banana<\/a>, potato<\/a>English bean<\/a>, cassava<\/a> and tomato<\/a>None of them have a significant weight in the sector's aggregate revenue.<\/p>\n

The explanation from the Ministry of Agriculture is straightforward. The annual decline is associated with lower expected prices for agricultural commodities and a slowdown in crop productivity. In other words: the producer delivered more grain and received less for it.<\/p>\n

The agribusiness GDP had already given a signal earlier. The indicator from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea\/Esalq-USP), calculated in partnership with the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA), fell by 2.01% in the first quarter of 2026, after growing above 12% in 2025.\n<\/p>\n

The contraction affected the entire chain. The primary segment fell by 4.15%, inputs decreased by 2.15%, agricultural services by 1.25%, and agro-industry by 1.03%. By sector, agriculture shrank by 3.62% and livestock farming grew by 0.70%, the only positive result in the survey.<\/p>\n

The effect on the sector's weight in the economy is the most striking piece of data. The agribusiness sector's share of the national GDP was estimated at 22.81% of the national GDP in 2026, compared to 25.21% in 2025. That's an increase of 2.4 percentage points in one year.<\/p>\n

Researchers from Cepea and CNA point to the same cause as Mapa: the expectation of a reduction in the value of production in 2026, driven by falling prices, which exceeded projected volume gains in various agricultural and livestock activities.<\/p>\n

For those planning the next harvest, the practical interpretation is that the gain in scale is not compensating for the loss of margin. The producer who harvested more in 2026 may have ended the year with lower revenue than in 2025, and the difference of R$ 66 billion in the national aggregate is the sum of these individual accounts.<\/p>\n

The chart also helps explain decisions that have already appeared in the field, such as the 20.4% reduction in the wheat area indicated by Conab itself. When margins tighten, the first cut is in investment in the least profitable crop.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
