A survey by the Federation of Rice Growers Associations of Rio Grande do Sul, Federarroz, identified discrepancies in the classification of rice<\/a> Type 1 sold to consumers in six Brazilian states. Of the 268 samples selected and analyzed, 215 showed a classification lower than that stated on the packaging. The samples were collected between November 2025 and January 2026, and the results will be forwarded to the competent authorities.\n<\/p>\n

According to data released by Federarroz, the index of 80.22% corresponds exclusively to the group of products selected for the survey. Therefore, the percentage does not represent the situation of all Type 1 rice sold in Brazil.<\/p>\n

The methodology adopted by the entity prioritized products that already showed visual signs of non-compliance with the classification indicated on the packaging and those found in the lowest price ranges of the surveyed shelves. All items sent for analysis were sold to consumers as Type 1 rice.<\/p>\n

The survey covered 167 establishments in 32 municipalities across the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paran\u00e1, S\u00e3o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. According to Federarroz, the operation covered approximately 8,500 kilometers, and the selected samples were sent to an accredited laboratory.<\/p>\n

Discrepancies in classification were found in products collected from all six states visited. Among the criteria evaluated were the presence of defects and the percentage of broken grains.<\/p>\n

According to Federarroz, there were samples marketed as Type 1 that presented 18% and even 35% of broken grains. According to the criteria used in the analyses, these percentages are associated with lower classifications.<\/p>\n

The survey addresses the correspondence between the commercial classification stated on the packaging and the characteristics of the rice actually delivered to the consumer. The organization emphasizes that the discrepancies found do not represent a health risk and do not mean that the products are unfit for consumption or contaminated.\n<\/p>\n

The president of Federarroz, Denis Dias Nunes, emphasizes that the results cannot be generalized to the entire national market.<\/p>\n

"It's important to emphasize that this number doesn't represent all the rice offered on the shelves. It refers to the products we analyzed, selected mainly because they already showed visual signs of non-conformity or were in price ranges much lower than other brands," he explains.<\/p>\n

In addition to the impact on the consumer, Federarroz states that differences between the declared quality and that found in the laboratory can affect competition among companies in the sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen lower-quality rice is sold as Type 1, it ends up competing on price with brands that do their job within quality standards. This practice harms the consumer and also the companies that comply with the rules,\u201d says Nunes.<\/p>\n

With the reports in hand, Federarroz intends to forward the identified cases to the responsible authorities and pursue appropriate measures in the administrative, civil, and criminal spheres.<\/p>\n

The organization's legal director, Anderson Belloli, states that each situation must be analyzed according to the competence of the bodies involved and the classification given to the nonconformities found.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about a possible consumer fraud, which is not limited to a quality issue. Based on the irregularities found, the information will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities so that each case can be investigated,\u201d he states.<\/p>\n

In the administrative sphere, according to Federarroz, the procedures should involve the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. In the civil area, Belloli cites the state Public Prosecutor's Offices and, in situations involving more than one state, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office.<\/p>\n

Any potential consequences in the criminal sphere will depend on the investigations conducted by the responsible authorities.<\/p>\n

Federarroz also intends to use the data obtained in the survey to broaden the discussion on the oversight of rice commercial classification in the country. According to the organization, the focus is on verifying whether the information presented to the consumer on the packaging actually corresponds to the product found inside the package.\n<\/p>\n
