According to the report &quot;The Biomass Challenge for Corn Ethanol,&quot; prepared by Ita\u00fa BBA&#039;s Agro Consulting firm, in Mato Grosso alone, the investments needed to expand energy forests could range between R$7.6 billion and R$14.3 billion in the coming years, depending on the evolution of operational efficiency at the industrial plants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Demand is keeping pace with the sector&#039;s strong growth. According to the study, Brazil&#039;s installed corn ethanol production capacity is expected to increase from 10.9 billion liters in 2025 to 25.3 billion liters in 2030. In Mato Grosso, the main national hub for this activity, the volume is expected to rise from 6.9 billion to 11.9 billion liters during the same period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">In an average efficiency scenario, the projected capacity of 13 billion liters of corn ethanol in Brazil by the end of 2026 would require approximately 35 million m\u00b3 of eucalyptus biomass, if this were the only source. To sustain this consumption continuously, a forest stock of approximately 440,000 hectares of planted eucalyptus would currently be necessary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The challenge is particularly relevant considering an installed capacity of nearly 12 billion liters by 2030; the state would require approximately 383,000 hectares of eucalyptus to meet the industry&#039;s energy needs. Currently, the estimated area is around 165,000 hectares, indicating a potential need to add 218,000 hectares of new energy forests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">For Ita\u00fa BBA, biomass availability is becoming part of the competitiveness agenda for the biofuel supply chain. Currently, the industry&#039;s biomass supply matrix is composed of different sources, including biomass from legally authorized deforestation, while regulatory changes and environmental requirements are increasing the need for renewable sources and planted forests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">In June of this year, Mato Grosso advanced in regulating the issue by establishing rules for the gradual reduction and subsequent elimination of the use of biomass from the suppression of native vegetation by large consumers. The agreement signed between the State Government and the Public Prosecutor&#039;s Office stipulates that new ventures must demonstrate sustainable sources of supply, prioritizing planted forests, sustainable forest management, and other renewable alternatives. For industries already established, the regulation sets a limit of up to 40% for the use of native biomass until 2034 and elimination from 2035 onwards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">\u201cThe availability of biomass is no longer just an operational issue, but a relevant factor for the economic and environmental viability of corn ethanol projects. Companies that structure their energy supply strategy in advance will have greater cost predictability, less exposure to regulatory risks, and better conditions to capture opportunities associated with the sustainability agenda,\u201d says Cesar de Castro Alves, manager of Agro Consulting at Ita\u00fa BBA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The pressure on supply will not come solely from ethanol. Biomass is also used by storage facilities, grain dryers, meat processing plants, and other agro-industrial sectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">In this scenario, expanding the forest base can contribute not only to guaranteeing the energy supply for the plants, but also to strengthening the sustainability credentials of Brazilian corn ethanol. The combination of second-crop corn and renewable biomass in the industrial process tends to increase the product&#039;s competitiveness in markets that value lower-carbon fuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong><strong>Opportunity for rural producers<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The need to expand planted forests can also open up an alternative source of income diversification for rural producers. According to estimates by Ita\u00fa BBA, a eucalyptus project focused on biomass production can present an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) close to 17% per year and a positive Net Present Value (NPV) of approximately R$ 4,300 per hectare, considering a minimum attractive rate of return of 14% per year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ads-wrapper\" id=\"dfp-noticiasagricolas-paragrafos-2\"><script>window.pushAds.push(\"dfp-noticiasagricolas-paragrafos-2\")<\/script><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">In a two-harvest cycle over 13 years, the project analyzed by the bank accumulates revenue of approximately R$ 104 thousand and total profit close to R$ 54 thousand. Under the adopted assumptions, this represents an average generation of approximately R$ 4.2 thousand per hectare per year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Converted to a metric more familiar to producers, the return corresponds to approximately 30 sacks of soybeans per hectare per year, which could make eucalyptus an alternative for areas with lower agricultural suitability or for properties interested in diversifying their revenue sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">\u201cMato Grosso has favorable conditions for this expansion, combining land availability, adequate rainfall patterns, and proximity to the main biomass consumption centers.
