Canola has regained ground in Paran\u00e1, with 6,000 hectares under cultivation and an estimated production of 11,000 tons in the current harvest. According to data released by the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) of the Paran\u00e1 State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (Seab), this volume is more than double the 5,200 tons harvested from 2,700 hectares in the previous harvest.\n<\/p>\n

According to data released by Deral\/Seab, the canola harvest progressed in Paran\u00e1 despite operational delays and losses in productive potential caused by excessive rainfall in August and September. The rainfall was associated with El Ni\u00f1o and also affected other winter crops in the state.<\/p>\n

Despite adverse weather conditions, the area cultivated with canola reached 6,000 hectares, while the estimated production reached 11,000 tons. In the previous harvest, 5,200 tons were harvested from 2,700 hectares.<\/p>\n

Excess moisture also brought phytosanitary impacts to the crop. The conditions favored the incidence of white mold, which was once again identified as the main obstacle to the expansion of canola acreage in the short term. The problem had already limited the crop's growth in the past.\n<\/p>\n

On the other hand, historical difficulties related to uneven ripening and losses during harvest have been overcome with advances in genetics and improvements in desiccation management.<\/p>\n

In the market, the scenario is considered positive for producers. According to data released by Deral\/Seab, canola prices are linked to soybean prices, and the recent appreciation of the oilseed has benefited canola producers. The Paran\u00e1 canola harvest is expected to generate around R$25 million in revenue in the field alone. The southern region of Paran\u00e1 should concentrate a good part of this result, as it accounts for more than half of the state's production.<\/p>\n

The early maturity of the cycle remains one of the main agronomic advantages of canola. This characteristic allows the soil to be freed up in time for soybean planting within the ideal window. This combination could favor the recovery of the area cultivated with canola in Paran\u00e1 in the coming harvests. The crop has the potential to exceed the 15,000 hectares recorded in 2013.\n<\/p>\n

Despite its growth potential, canola expansion in Paran\u00e1 is likely to face limitations. The crop is unlikely to reach the scale seen in Rio Grande do Sul. One factor is the consolidation of second-crop corn in the northern and western regions of Paran\u00e1, where the crop occupies a significant space in the production system.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
