These pests cause direct damage by feeding on the endosperm and germ of the grain. wheatOften, losses in weight and quality create conflicts between the storage company and the product owner.

Among the main pests are weevils of the genus Sitophilus, beetles Rhyzopertha dominica and Tribolium spp., and moths Sitotroga cerealella and Plodia interpunctella. Under favorable conditions of heat and humidity, these insects can complete generations in a few weeks, rapidly expanding an initial infestation.

High grain moisture content, dough temperatures between approximately 25°C and 30°C, the presence of impurities, broken grains, and residues from previous harvests increase the risk of infestation. Lack of monitoring also hinders control, as many infestations are only noticed when insects, dust, altered odor, or hot spots are already visible. Increased temperature combined with high humidity favors the development of storage fungi such as Aspergillus and Penicillium, which can produce mycotoxins, toxic substances that render wheat unfit for human and animal consumption.

These occurrences, due to external temperature changes, can depreciate the quality of breadmaking, altering the flour's color, protein structure, and reducing gluten strength (W). High temperatures can cause lipid breakdown, increasing fatty acidity and generating a rancid odor in the product.

Prevention begins before storage.

Cleaning the structures before the wheat arrives is one of the main preventative measures. Hoppers, elevators, conveyors, floors, and walls must be free of residue and dust from the previous harvest.

It is also important to reduce impurities and broken grains through pre-cleaning and cleaning, as well as maintaining the wheat moisture content compatible with the expected storage time. The reference provided generally indicates a water content of around 12% to 13% for storage over several months.

Aeration is another important tool. The passage of cooler air through the grain mass helps to reduce and even out the temperature, decreasing insect activity. Management should consider the difference between the external temperature and the temperature of the grains, as well as the relative humidity, to avoid rehumidification.

Monitoring should include visual inspections, traps, and temperature and humidity monitoring. Localized and persistent temperature changes may indicate insect activity or problems with the preservation of the stored product.

When an infestation is already established, authorized chemical interventions may be necessary, including fumigation with registered fumigants. This type of operation requires adequate infrastructure, trained professionals, and adherence to safety deadlines, labels, package inserts, and agricultural prescriptions.

The combination of cleaning, humidity and temperature control, aeration, and frequent monitoring is the main strategy for reducing losses in stored wheat during the warmer months.

THE Bela Cereais works with the best grains on the market and also keeps you up to date with the latest news and analyses on agribusiness.
Don't forget to follow our social networks.

Access News Source

Por Aline Merladete, com colaboração e revisão de Ubirajara Fontoura, engenheiro agrônomo.
