Imports of corn<\/a> European Union exports grew by 40% in the 2026\/27 season up to October 18, driven by the effects of a severe drought on the bloc's crops. The increase in external purchases occurs against the backdrop of the prospect that European cereal production will be the lowest since 2000, altering demand from major international suppliers.\n<\/p>\n

According to the weekly analysis by the International Center for Economic Analysis and Agricultural Market Studies (CEEMA), accumulated European imports since the beginning of July reached 6.64 million tons by October 18. This volume demonstrates the increase in external acquisitions in a scenario of agricultural losses that have reduced the prospects for regional supply.<\/p>\n

The United States is among the main beneficiaries of the growth in European demand. According to the report, the bloc imported 2.9 million tons of American corn during the analyzed period. In the same period of the previous cycle, purchases from the United States totaled approximately 900,000 tons, demonstrating a significant increase in the share of American corn.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has also increased its corn shipments to the European market. Sales rose from 770,000 tons in the same period of the previous year to 1.62 million tons this season, more than doubling in volume. This movement reflects the European Union's increased need for imports following losses caused by drought.\n<\/p>\n

Conversely, Brazil lost market share in this trade flow. European imports of Brazilian corn decreased from 2.74 million to 1.82 million tons year-on-year. Despite the reduction, Brazil remained the second largest supplier of the cereal to the European Union, behind the United States, according to volumes presented by CEEMA.<\/p>\n

While European demand increased, international corn prices remained pressured by the harvest in the United States. On the Chicago Board of Trade, the first contract closed the trading session on October 22nd at US$ 4.60 per bushel, below the US$ 4.78 recorded a week earlier. The decline reinforced the downward bias identified by CEEMA in the US futures market.<\/p>\n

By October 18th, the US corn harvest had reached 44% of the planted area. This percentage remained below the historical average of 52% for the period, but the progress of the work continued to be a factor putting pressure on trading in Chicago. The price table in the bulletin shows a decline from US$$ 4.74 per bushel on October 16th to US$$ 4.60 on the 22nd, with a weekly average of US$$ 4.65.\n<\/p>\n
