Mato Grosso confirms outbreak of bird flu in subsistence poultry

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) confirmed last Saturday (07) an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (IAAP) in a subsistence poultry farm in the municipality of Campinápolis, in Mato Grosso. This is the fourth record of the disease in subsistence birds in Brazil.

According to Mapa, the Official Veterinary Service has already closed off the property and collected samples from the birds, which tested positive for the avian flu virus. Disease eradication and health surveillance actions within a 10-kilometer radius around the outbreak began on Sunday (08). The ministry reported that there are no commercial poultry establishments in the affected area.

The ministry stressed that the outbreak does not affect international trade in Brazilian poultry products. Consumption and export remain safe, since the detection only involved subsistence birds.

The Ministry of Agriculture also clarified that the new focus does not change the 28-day sanitary vacuum period that began after the disinfection of the area in Montenegro (RS), where a case of the disease was registered in a commercial poultry breeding farm, and which ends on June 18.
