Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina should harvest more than 800 thousand tons of soybeans, indicates Giro da Safra

The 2024/2025 soybean harvest in the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina is expected to reach around 806 thousand tons, with more than 165 thousand hectares cultivated and an estimated average productivity of 81 sc/ha, ranging from 52 to 105 sc/ha. The data is part of the Giro da Safra survey, an initiative carried out by Sicoob Central SC/RS and Epagri, which visited 50 plantations in the region to assess the development of the crop.

The project visited properties in Mafra, Canoinhas, Itaiópolis, Irineópolis, Papanduva, Major Vieira, Rio Negrinho and Porto União, collecting data to assess information for monitoring the state's harvest. The municipality of Mafra leads production in the region with more than 34 thousand hectares and 122,717 tons, followed by Canoinhas with 28,500 hectares planted and production of almost 107 thousand tons of the grain. According to Epagri, the first grain harvest in the state saw an increase of 2.6% in the planted area, 9.7% in average productivity and an increase of 12.6% in the quantity produced.

On the morning of last Thursday (20) in Mafra, the Epagri extension agent from Itaiópolis, Johnny Fusinato Franzon, presented the partial results of the analyses carried out during the Giro to farmers, industry leaders and technicians involved in the project. The event with more than 500 guests also featured a lecture by digital influencer farmer Laercio Dalla Vecchia and agronomist Leandro Wildner.

Epagri’s president, Dirceu Leite, celebrates the success of Giro Safra. For him, the initiative demonstrated the great capacity for cooperation between the public and private sectors, through the partnership between Epagri, the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock, Sicoob, production cooperatives and educational institutions. “This harmony has been essential to strengthen agribusiness in Santa Catarina. In this case, we were able to gather information about the real estimate of the soybean harvest for the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina. With this information, we adjusted the state’s harvest monitoring system, creating a more accurate production plan for the entire region,” he says.

The coordinator of Agro Business Strategy at Sicoob Central SC/RS, Paulo Vitor Sangaletti, highlights the importance of the financial institution’s presence in the field to understand the needs of producers. “Giro da Safra has already established itself as a successful project, as it allows us to talk directly with farmers and offer financial solutions aligned with the demands of the sector. For Sicoob, being close to producers is essential to develop products and services that boost agribusiness,” he says.

The manager of the Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning at Epagri/Cepa, agricultural engineer Edilene Steinwandter, comments that the main focus of the Harvest Tour is to provide farmers with the most relevant data on the soybean production chain, since it is the main grain produced in the state. “Through the information we collect in the field, we are able to provide Santa Catarina’s agriculture with better quality information in a timely manner, even before the soybean harvest,” she explains.

Soybean production in Santa Catarina grew 93% in the last 12 years

Soybeans have been gaining more and more space in Santa Catarina's agribusiness, especially in areas that were previously used for planting corn. According to data from Santa Catarina Agricultural Observatory, over the last 12 years, Santa Catarina increased grain production by 93% and the planted area by 60.5%.

According to agricultural engineer João Alves, Socioeconomic and Rural Development analyst at Epagri/Cepa, this increase is due to the appreciation of the grain in the international market. “Greater price stability compared to other commodities is an aspect that has motivated producers to expand their planting areas,” explains Alves.

For the Deputy Secretary of the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Livestock, Admir Dalla Cort, soybeans are one of the symbols of the strength of agribusiness in Santa Catarina. “Together with associated companies, we work to ensure that producers are always supported with information and programs that guarantee the efficiency and quality of production,” he emphasizes.
