Soybeans have been gaining more and more space in Santa Catarina's agribusiness, especially in areas that were previously used for planting corn. According to data from the Santa Catarina Agricultural Observatory, over the last 12 years, Santa Catarina has increased its grain production by 93% and its planted area by 60.5%. For the first 2024/2025 harvest of the crop in the State, the Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning (Epagri/Cepa) estimates that the grain had an increase of 2.62% in the planted area, 9.79% in average productivity and an increase of 12.67% in the quantity produced.
According to agricultural engineer João Alves, Socioeconomic and Rural Development analyst at Epagri/Cepa, this increase is due to the appreciation of the grain in the international market. “Greater price stability compared to other commodities is an aspect that has motivated producers to expand their planting areas,” explains Alves.
In the graphs below, taken from the Santa Catarina Agricultural Observatory, it is possible to visualize the evolution of culture in the state since 2012.

Soybean Crop Rotation
This week, from March 17 to 20, Epagri/Cepa and Sicoob Central SC/RS will promote the 2024/2025 Soybean Harvest Tour, with the aim of evaluating the productivity of the crop in the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina.
Through the Harvest Giro, Epagri/Cepa improves its monitoring system with more assertive data. To this end, information is collected in the field from a probabilistic sample composed of 50 crops distributed in the municipalities of Mafra (12), Canoinhas (8), Itaiópolis (9), Irienópolis (4), Papanduva (5), Major Vieira (3), Rio Negrinho (5) and Porto União (3). Last Thursday (20), the event ended in Mafra with the presentation of the partial results of the analyses carried out during the Giro.
Production in the Northern Plateau
The Northern Plateau region of Santa Catarina is the largest producer of soybeans in the state: last year it harvested around 586 thousand tons in 171 thousand hectares of planted area, according to data from Santa Catarina Agricultural Observatory. Epagri/Cepa indicates that, in this first soybean harvest 2024/2025, the estimated planted area in Mafra is over 34 thousand hectares and the production of 122,717 tons, followed by Canoinhas with 28,500 hectares planted and production of almost 107 thousand tons of the grain.
