Piauí's VBP (Value of Agricultural Production) reaches R$ 11.3 billion, driven by soybeans and corn.

The agricultural sector in Piauí shows signs of slowing down as 2025 draws to a close. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) released on November 21, the Gross Value of Production (VBP) of the state reached R$ 11,354.25 million, a nominal decrease of 4,73% compared to the R$ 11,918 million recorded in 2024. This performance puts the state in a direction contrary to the national scenario, which projects growth in the same period.

While Piauí's agricultural sector shrinks, Brazil's VBP (Value of Agricultural Production) jumped from approximately R$1.21 trillion in 2024 to R$1.41 trillion in 2025. This divergence highlights the state's low relevance to the national agricultural GDP: Piauí's share, which was already modest, fell from 0.98% to just 0.80% of the Brazilian total. The state currently occupies the 16th position in the national ranking.

Product Dynamics

The agricultural economy of Piauí is highly dependent on commodities, which explains the volatility of the VBP (Value of Agricultural Production). The state's "flagship" crop, soybeans, registered a drop of 3.6% (Total Productive Value), going from R$$ 7.340 million in 2024 to R$$ 7.073.5 million in 2025. The scenario is even more critical for corn, which suffered a contraction of 12.8%, falling from R$$ 2.321 million to R$$ 2.024.7 million.

Animal Protein

The Gross Value of Production (VBP) of Piauí is composed mainly of crops (93%), leaving only 7% for livestock. Within this niche, the configuration in 2025 shows:

  • Cattle: R$ 464.6 million (4th largest activity in the state).

  • Eggs: R$ 131.2 million.

  • Chickens: R$ 113.6 million.

  • Milk: R$ 66.2 million.

  • Pigs: R$ 13.0 million.

The low prominence of livestock farming in relation to grains highlights the lack of diversification and integration between crop and livestock farming in the state, keeping the Gross Value of Production (VBP) vulnerable to price and weather fluctuations that affect soybeans and corn.

Historical Evolution

The historical graph reveals that Piauí experienced a boom between 2020 and 2022, jumping from R$ 10.7 billion to a peak of R$ 13.9 billion. However, since 2023, the state has entered a trajectory of consecutive decline. The 2025 value (R$ 11.3 billion) is the lowest in the last five years, approaching pre-pandemic levels and suggesting that previous growth was driven by extraordinary market prices, and not by a permanent structural productivity gain.

The data indicates that agribusiness in Piauí faces a challenge of scale and diversification. The extreme dependence on soybeans and corn (which together account for more than 80% of the total VBP) makes the state hostage to international prices. While Brazil expands its frontier and increases added value, Piauí cannot sustain the pace, losing relative market share. The decline in livestock farming and subsistence crops, such as beans and cassava, points to a fragility in both large-scale producers and family farming.

The 2025 edition stands not only as a snapshot of the highest Gross Production Value (VBP) in history, but also as an essential guide to understanding the paths and challenges facing Brazilian agribusiness in the short and medium term. Check out the digital version by clicking [here]. here.
