Opening of Morocco's market to beef boosts exports from Mato Grosso

The recent opening of the Moroccan market to imports of beef offal from Brazil, made official on April 8, represents a new opportunity to increase exports from the beef industry in Mato Grosso. This is the assessment made by the Mato Grosso Meat Institute (Imac), which works to promote the state's beef products internationally.

“This new opportunity with Morocco is important because it contributes to the diversification of our client portfolio. Although the volume initially traded may not be as significant as that of China, expanding the number of markets and ensuring that they are consistent can help us at times when large buyers reduce their demand for Mato Grosso beef,” explains Imac’s project director, Bruno de Jesus Andrade.

With a population of around 37 million, Morocco is considered a strategic market for Brazil, with significant potential for expansion. In 2023, Brazilian beef exports to the country exceeded US$1.5 billion, placing Brazil as the second largest supplier. With the release of imports of offal, this value is expected to increase from 2025 onwards.

In order for the new agreement to be implemented, the Moroccan government approved the proposal for an International Health Certificate, updating the criteria required for beef exports. The measure also paves the way for the consolidation of new commercial partnerships, especially considering that Brazil, with Mato Grosso as the leader in beef production, has presented a rigorous health control system.

“The outlook is positive, as a result of the work of the Mato Grosso Meat Institute, which has been working hard to promote our products. We have shown the world that we produce sustainably and with quality, and that meat from Mato Grosso deserves more and more space in the international market,” highlights the Secretary of State for Economic Development and president of the Imac Deliberative Council, César Miranda.
