Farmers hit by extreme weather should have debts extended, says Mapa

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) informs that, last Tuesday (29), Minister Carlos Fávaro received, in an institutional hearing, the president of the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, Supply and Rural Development of the Chamber of Deputies (CAPADR), federal deputy Rodolfo Nogueira, accompanied by federal parliamentarians Zucco, Marcelo Moraes, Afonso Hamm, Heitor Schuch, Bohn Gass and Alceu Moreira, as well as Senator Luis Carlos Heinze and the coordinator of the SOS Agro Movement, Graziela de Camargoem, for a meeting held at the Ministry's headquarters.

The meeting's agenda focused on discussing emergency and structural actions aimed at supporting rural producers impacted by adverse climate events.

As an immediate step, MAPA will send an official letter to the Ministry of Finance, requesting an extraordinary meeting of the National Monetary Council (CMN), to deliberate on the application of the Rural Credit Manual in order to enable the extension of the debts for financing, investment and Rural Product Bonds (CPR) contracted by the affected producers. It was also proposed to relax the limit of 8% of rural credit per financial institution, provided for in said manual, so that they can grant extensions of installments for investment financing, due in 2025, reiterating the request already submitted, through official letters No. 255/2025/GAB-GM/GM-MAPA/MAPA and No. 358/2025/GAB-GM/GM-MAPA/MAPA.

Additionally, the establishment of an inter-institutional working group was announced, with the participation of MAPA, CAPADR, the Agriculture Committee of the Federal Senate and an invitation extended to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming (MDA), as well as the Ministry of Finance. This group will have the mission of formulating proposals for structural measures, including the creation of funds for the recovery of degraded areas and the renegotiation of long-term debts resulting from losses caused by extreme weather events.

Also representing Mapa were the Chief of Staff of Minister Carlos Fávaro, Wilson Taques, the special advisor to the minister, Carlos Ernesto Augustin, the Secretary of Agricultural Policy, Guilherme Campos, the Deputy Secretary of Agricultural Policy, Wilson Vaz, and the head of the Special Advisory Office for Parliamentary and Federative Affairs, Flávia Rodrigues.
