Japan announced yesterday (17) the temporary suspension of imports of chicken meat, fertile eggs and one-day-old chicks from Goiás and Mato Grosso, after the confirmation of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HIAIV) in subsistence birds in the municipalities of Santo Antônio da Barra (GO) and Campinápolis (MT).
The decision follows the regionalization protocol signed between the two countries, meaning the measure is localized and does not affect exports from other Brazilian states. Trade with other international markets continues as normal.
The Ministry of Agriculture reinforced that the Brazilian health defense system remains active, and that the consumption and export of poultry products remain safe, with no risk to public health or external supply.
Although it was a one-off measure, the suspension reinforces how sensitive the health issue remains — and how any new outbreak, even in subsistence production, can generate an immediate commercial reaction. Regionalization, however, has worked as a damage containment tool, avoiding national blockades and allowing Brazil to maintain its position as the world's largest exporter of chicken meat.
