Low temperatures impact the progress of the second corn harvest in some states, says Conab

The low temperatures recorded in recent days have slowed the natural loss of grain moisture in some states. This scenario has influenced harvesting work, since the time needed for the cereal to reach the ideal moisture content to be harvested increases. According to the Harvest Progress, published by the National Supply Company (Conab), the harvest has reached 3.9% of the 2nd corn sown area, a rate lower than that recorded in the average of the last 5 years.

In Mato Grosso, work has already reached 5.6% of the area cultivated with the cereal. The rate is lower than that recorded in the same period last year. However, it is worth noting that in the 2023/24 cycle, the planting of the cereal in the second cycle began early due to the climate problems recorded in soybean cultivation, influenced by El Niño. However, the good crop conditions in the current harvest may contribute to productivity exceeding that obtained in the last season.

In Paraná, drier weather over the past week has allowed the harvest to progress. However, lower temperatures and rainfall over the weekend have forced the work to slow down. According to Progresso, approximately 4% of the Paraná area have already been harvested.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the passage of a cold front did not cause damage to crops, but it slowed down the harvest. Farmers in the state have already harvested 2% of the area, while the average for the last 5 years is around 2.7%. On the other hand, the colder weather in the producing areas of Mato Grosso do Sul contributed to reducing the population of insects that could harm the crop.

In Goiás, the harvest began in the south of the state, but was halted due to high grain moisture levels. In Minas Gerais, producers are also waiting for a greater reduction in grain moisture levels to speed up work. In São Paulo, the rains recorded are another factor in the delay in the start of the harvest.

While colder weather has influenced the delay in the corn harvest, low temperatures have favored the development of wheat crops. In Paraná, sowing of the cereal is progressing and the planted areas have shown good development, benefiting from lower temperatures and adequate levels of soil moisture. In Rio Grande do Sul, after the rains of the previous weeks, producers took advantage of the dry weather to sow the crop. The crops planted earlier showed good emergence and initial establishment conditions.
