Pig farming in Mato Grosso do Sul achieves national top 3 in sustainability

Pig farming in Mato Grosso do Sul has just been recognized as one of the most sustainable in the country. Estância Colorada, located in Jateí, Mato Grosso do Sul, won third place in the medium-sized category of the 2025 Sustainable Farm Award, sponsored by Globo Rural magazine. The initiative recognizes properties that combine efficient production with social, environmental, and economic responsibility. In 2025, 114 farms from 20 states participated in the awards, and Mato Grosso do Sul stood out with 22 entries. After expert evaluation, Estância Colorada, owned by producer Celso Phillippi Junior, secured its place among the 15 best in Brazil.

Linked to the Mato Grosso do Sul Pig Farmers Association (Asumas), which is affiliated with the Brazilian Pig Farmers Association (ABCS), the property participates in both the Leitão Vida Program and the Asumas Sustainability Program (PAS), which evaluates practices related to the rational use of resources, waste management, and social responsibility. The balance between diversified production and environmental preservation was crucial for this recognition. The farm covers a total of 270 hectares, 66 of which are designated for conservation, while the remainder houses activities related to animal protein production. Its strongest point is modern pig farming, focused on biosecurity, animal welfare, and reduced environmental impacts.

For Marcelo Lopes, president of ABCS, the achievement symbolizes the sector's progress: "This award is a source of pride for the entire swine industry. This recognition shows that the Brazilian swine industry is prepared to grow in an innovative and responsible way, responding to society's expectations." Renato Spera, president of Asumas, also celebrated the achievement. According to Spera, "It is an honor for us at Asumas to see a producer from Mato Grosso do Sul among the most sustainable in Brazil. The award is a clear sign that the path of swine industry involves responsibility, technology, and a commitment to the future," he emphasized.
