Banana: Brazilian exports to Mercosur are slow

Brazilian banana exports to Mercosur have not had good numbers since the beginning of the year. According to Secex, the volume shipped was 18 thousand tons between January and March/23, a drop of 26% compared to the same period last year.

According to exporters contacted by Hortifruti/Cepea, the reduction in the number of shipments is due to better sales prices in the domestic market for the nanica producer during the period, associated with the controlled supply in the main exporting regions. In addition, important buyers, such as Argentina, have been facing financial restrictions.

The expectation is that the increase in the national volume of nanica in May could slightly reduce domestic prices, making the fruit more competitive internationally and contributing to the resumption of larger volumes destined for Mercosur countries, mainly Argentina.
