Agribusiness exports reach record highs in March and year-to-date

The value exported by Brazilian agribusiness reached a record of US$1.5 billion in March of this year. The products that stood out the most in the month, due to the growth in export value, were: soybeans (+US$878.3 million), corn (+US$397.8 million), soybean meal (+US$330.5 million), raw cane sugar (+US$215.2 million) and fresh chicken meat (+US$214 million).

Together, the products contributed US$1.5 billion to the increase in exports, higher than the US$1.6 billion growth in the sector's total external sales. In March 2022, agribusiness exports were US$1.4 billion.

According to the analysis by the Secretariat of Trade and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the increase in the volume shipped largely explains the historical value of agribusiness exports in March 2023. The quantum index of Brazilian agribusiness exports rose 7.1%, and the price index of exported products increased by 3.5%.

Soybeans and soybean meal

In the soybean complex, two products deserve mention with records in volume and foreign exchange: soybeans and meal. Soybeans reached US$1.5 billion (+13.6%) and shipments of 13.2 million tons (+8.6%). Brazil harvested a record crop of the oilseed estimated at 153.6 million tons (+22.4%). China continues to be the main destination, absorbing 75.7% of the total shipped by Brazil.

Soybean meal sales reached a record value of US$1.1 billion (+45.5%) and almost 2 million tons (+31.7%). The European Union, the largest importer of the product, acquired US$492.3 million (+40.9%) and 904.4 thousand tons (+29.1%).

Chicken meat

The country's exports reached a record of US$$ 967.8 million (+29.6%) in March this year, with an increase of 25.5% in export volumes, which were 504.9 thousand tons. The main importers were China, Japan and Saudi Arabia.

According to SCRI analysts, in a global context with widespread outbreaks of bird flu in major exporters, additional opportunities have opened up for the Brazilian market, as Brazil has never registered any cases in its territory.

Sugar

Sugar exports reached a record US$$818.1 million (+46.4%). Export volume increased by 27.0% to 1.8 million tonnes. Lower sugar production is expected in countries such as China, India, Mexico, Thailand and the European Union.

Corn

Corn exports reached US$1.5 billion. In March 2022, they were only US$1.5 billion. The main destinations were Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.
