The Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Mato Grosso (Famato) maintains its coordination with rural producers, rural unions, and the Association of Pig Breeders of Mato Grosso (Acrismat) in search of alternatives to make the control of wild boars in the state more efficient. On October 20th and 21st, meetings held in Araputanga and Cáceres brought together representatives of the sector and licensed controllers to discuss the challenges of managing the species and to forward demands to the competent authorities.
Reports from professionals directly involved in pest management help identify difficulties faced on rural properties and inform discussions about control procedures. The exchange of information also strengthens dialogue between producers, representative entities, and professionals involved in the activity.
Wild boar are an invasive exotic species that cause damage to agricultural production and the environment, such as siltation and alteration of waterways. In Brazil, control of the species is permitted throughout the national territory, provided that the requirements established by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) are met.
Given this scenario, Famato advocates for the unification of processes and the definition of clearer rules, adapted to the conditions of the rural environment. The organization also seeks to increase legal security for rural landowners and individuals authorized to carry out management, in order to facilitate control actions and contribute to the collection of information and monitoring of the species.
According to Marcos Carvalho, technical advisor for Livestock at Famato, dialogue with those facing the problem on their farms is fundamental to building alternatives applicable to the reality of the field.
“Famato is at the forefront of this discussion because wild boar is a sanitary and production problem that producers face every day. We are listening to each region, gathering demands, and taking them to the competent authorities in defense of more effective and safe rules for those who manage them legally,” he states.
The CEO of Acrismat, Custódio Rodrigues, also highlights the importance of joint action to address the problem. According to him, closer collaboration between producers, entities, and professionals involved in control allows for the identification of the main obstacles and the gathering of information to support discussions with the responsible agencies.
“This is the beginning of work that will become more impactful through initiatives like this. As we delve deeper, we develop a more technical understanding of sanitary and environmental issues. This is fundamental so that the difficulties faced in the field are considered in the construction of simpler and safer procedures, allowing for legal management and contributing to reducing the damage caused by the species to agricultural production, which can even reach cities,” Custódio emphasizes.
Famato will continue to monitor the issue and develop alternatives for wild boar control in Mato Grosso, focusing on more accessible procedures, legal security, and measures compatible with the reality of rural properties.
The meetings also had the support of the Mato Grosso Swine Farming Health and Development Fund (FSSD), the Mato Grosso Agricultural Defense Institute (Indea-MT), and the Agro MT Forum, represented by Famato, Acrismat, the Mato Grosso Cotton Producers Association (AMPA), the Mato Grosso Seed Producers Association (Aprosmat), the Mato Grosso Breeders Association, and the OCB/MT System.
