Cold weather and heavy rains are expected to continue marking the beginning of spring in Brazil, according to data released by Meteored. In the coming days, masses of cold air will continue to advance through the Southeast and may reach Bahia and states in the Northeast, while new waves of cold and rain are forecast for the end of September.
Two cold air masses affected the country in less than a week, keeping south-central regions with below-average temperatures in recent days. Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul recorded temperatures below 2°C in several municipalities, with frost occurring.
The cold weather is expected to continue in the coming days and move across the Southeast, reaching Bahia and some states in the Northeast. As a result, temperatures should also become milder in these regions, according to data released by Meteored.
The cold fronts that moved across the country also caused high volumes of rain, well above normal in the south-central region. The highest accumulations were recorded between São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina.
Next week, however, the heat is expected to intensify again across much of Brazil. According to data released by Meteored, the change is partly related to the shift in the Antarctic Oscillation, a phenomenon that should hinder the advance of new polar air masses.
The scenario, however, could change again at the end of September. Forecasts indicate the return of cold weather and heavy rains, prolonging the pattern of cold and rainy weather in the country.
According to data released by Meteored, this behavior could maintain heavy rainfall and atypical cold in the South until mid-October, extending the period by 30 days or more.
Predictions of temperature anomalies between September 28 and October 12 indicate that new masses of cold air should advance through the three states of the Southern Region — Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná — as well as São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
The advance of colder weather is expected to coincide with the formation of new extratropical cyclones and their associated cold fronts. According to data released by Meteored, these systems should also contribute to the continuation of rainy weather, especially in the Southern Region.
Heavy rains are also expected to hit much of the Central-West and Southeast regions. However, the highest rainfall totals are predicted for the Southern region.
The start of Spring, which occurs on September 22nd, should be marked by rainy and cold weather in south-central Brazil. This scenario will continue the pattern observed in recent weeks, although the cold air mass predicted for this period is not expected to be as intense as those that have been present recently.
Starting in October, the trend is for a gradual change in the weather pattern. The heat is expected to return in much of the country.
According to data released by Meteored, forecasts generally indicate that Spring and Summer should be marked by high temperatures and heavy rainfall across much of Brazil. This behavior is largely related to the influence of the strong El Niño phenomenon forming in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
