Crop assessment, prospects and definition of the host city for the official opening of the 2027 harvest were on the agenda of the first meeting of the Corn Sector Chamber of 2026, held online on the morning of this Thursday (19).
Data from the Conjunctural Report published by Emater/RS-Ascar last week indicates that Rio Grande do Sul has already harvested approximately 50% of corn. An assessment of this harvest is still premature, according to the entities that participated in the meeting.

According to the technical assistant of Emater/RS-Ascar, agricultural engineer Alencar Rugeri, this was a rather peculiar year, with some areas having good production and others not so much. "The regions that had good productivity were associated with good management and good cultivars," assessed Rugeri. According to him, the average productivity should reach the same numbers as last year, around 7 tons/hectare, in a total area of 785,000 hectares. A new projection should be released in early March by Emater.
The Development and Strategic Support Manager of Conab/RS, Matias José Fuhr, highlighted the increase of 9.31% in cultivated area, from 718,000 ha to 780,000 ha, as one of the positive aspects of this harvest. "These numbers show the potential that corn has for the economy of Rio Grande do Sul," stated Fuhr. The company, the manager informed, makes monthly harvest estimates, the last one being published last week.
Opening of the Harvest
The last Opening Ceremony for the 2025/2026 Corn Harvest took place in January of this year in São Borja, on the Sallet family's property. And at today's meeting, the Chamber approved a request presented by the municipality of Santo Ângelo and the leaders of Fenamilho Internacional, for the Official Opening of the 2026/2027 Corn Harvest to be held in the city and to be part of the Fair's program. The Opening will take place in January or February, on a date to be determined.
A new meeting of the Chamber is scheduled for May, with the agenda including the Crop Plan, an evaluation of the 2025/2026 crop season, and planting prospects.
Those who participated in the meeting were: Emater/RS-Ascar, Apromilho, Famurs, Farsul, Sistema Ocergs, SIPS, Conab/RS, Sindilat and Seapi.
