The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a series of alerts for heavy rains and storms in different regions of Brazil between this Tuesday (10) and Wednesday (11), with emphasis on a warning of great danger due to the high accumulation of rain in areas of the Southeast and Midwest.
According to Inmet, the most serious alert starts at 00:00 this Wednesday (11) and continues until 23:59. The forecast indicates rainfall exceeding 60 mm per hour or above 100 mm per day, which increases the risk of significant flooding, overflowing rivers and landslides, especially in cities with vulnerable areas.
The regions most affected by this warning include parts of the interior of São Paulo state — such as Presidente Prudente, São José do Rio Preto, Ribeirão Preto, Bauru, Araçatuba, Marília, Araraquara, Campinas, and Piracicaba — as well as eastern and southwestern Mato Grosso do Sul, the Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba region, western and southern Minas Gerais, and the greater São Paulo metropolitan area. Areas of the Pantanal region in Mato Grosso do Sul and the Vale do Paraíba region in São Paulo also appear on the list of regions at greatest risk.
In addition to the high danger alert, the institute also published warnings of danger for intense rains, valid between Tuesday (10) and Thursday (12), covering a large area of the country. In these locations, rainfall between 30 and 60 mm per hour or up to 100 mm per day is expected, accompanied by winds of 60 to 100 km/h, with the possibility of power outages, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges.
These warnings affect regions of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Goiás, as well as areas of Mato Grosso, Amazonas, Acre and Rondônia.
In southern Brazil, another storm warning with a degree of danger is also in effect for Wednesday (11). The forecast indicates rainfall of 30 to 60 mm per hour or up to 100 mm per day, winds between 60 and 100 km/h and the possibility of hail. The warning covers areas of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and southwestern Paraná, including regions such as the Serra Catarinense, western Santa Catarina, the Porto Alegre metropolitan area and south-central Paraná.
Warnings of potential danger from heavy rains indicate rainfall between 20 and 30 mm per hour or up to 50 mm per day, with winds of up to 60 km/h. According to Inmet, in these areas the risk is considered lower, but there is still a possibility of localized flooding, falling branches, and electrical discharges.
These warnings cover areas of Paraná, the southern coast of São Paulo, and a wide swath of the North, Northeast, and Central-West regions.
