Producers are planting green corn early to guarantee the harvest.

THE corn-green begins to advance in Rio Grande do Sul with staggered plantings to guarantee weekly supply from October and November. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar in the Conjunctural Report on Thursday (27), producers in Cruzeiro do Sul, in the Lajeado region, already have areas in vegetative development and are facing the first records of corn leafhopper.

In the Lajeado administrative region of Emater/RS-Ascar, the green corn crop is currently in its off-season for commercialization. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, some farmers began planting in small areas as early as July. Currently, all producers already have areas in the initial stage of vegetative development. Sowing is carried out in a staggered manner, with new plantings every 15 days. The strategy aims to distribute production and allow for weekly harvesting starting in October and November.

To date, no disease-related problems have been reported in the green corn fields. On the other hand, according to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, there is already an incidence of corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis).

The presence of the pest has required producers to adopt chemical and biological control measures. Monitoring areas in vegetative development is therefore already part of crop management for the next harvest period.
