Independent Pig Farming: Meatpacking plants manage to hold on to new positive price adjustments in São Paulo and Goiás

On Wednesday (18), the commercialization of pigs in the independent market showed distinct movements in the states monitored by Notícias Agrícolas. The market is still attentive to how demand will behave with the holiday and the coming weeks.

According to an agreement between pig farmers and slaughterhouses, according to data from the São Paulo Association of Pig Breeders (APCS), the price of pigs in the state of São Paulo remained stable and is priced at R$ 08.97/kg live.

“Although the regional market is being very well sought after for live animals, the slaughterhouses that participate in the exchange believe that the price of slaughtered animals still does not correspond to the values of live pigs. Therefore, it was decided to maintain the price and expect new realignments in the prices next week. It is observed that wholesale and retail sales are going very well and there is no rotation on the farms and the animals are around R$ 113.00/kg”, commented Valdomiro Ferreira, President of APCS.

In the Minas Gerais market, the value of the animal depreciated by 2.35% this week and is being traded close to R$ 08.50/kg live, whereas the previous week it was quoted at R$ 8.70/kg, according to the Association of Pig Farmers of the State of Minas Gerais (Asemg).

“Producers tried to push prices up to R$ 8.70, but reality sent them back to R$ 8.50. They were hindered by the holiday this week and the higher weights on farms. With these variables, meatpackers were able to hold the price — above that, their pass-through worsens. Price resistance is not a theory — it is a ceiling of reality,” said the Association’s market consultant, Alvimar Jalles.

According to information from the Santa Catarina Pig Breeders Association (ACCS), the value of the animal registered a slight gain of 0.86%, going from R$ 8.18/kg last week and is priced at R$ 8.25/kg live.

The President of the Santa Catarina Pig Breeders Association (ACCS), Losivânio de Lorenzi, pointed out that supply is below what the market needs. “Prices have increased by a few cents, but this was very important. It is important to highlight that from May until now, fewer animals have been offered and this shows that the market is well regulated,” he concluded.

Santa Catarina's leadership still believes that lower temperatures should help increase domestic consumption next week. "This will increase consumption in the domestic market and we also expect shipments to remain high, since the main importers need our pork," he said.
