Producers from the Campanha region learn about technologies for cattle and climate management.

Producers from the Campanha region of Rio Grande do Sul had the opportunity to learn about technologies applied to beef cattle farming on Tuesday (18) during the Field Day organized by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi), through the Department of Agricultural Diagnosis and Research (DDPA). The event took place at the State Center for Diagnosis and Research in Integrated Systems and Applied Meteorology (Cesimet).

The activity focused on research and practical tools for cattle management, nutrition, tick control, biometric identification, and agrometeorology, aimed especially at producers in the region.

According to Gabriel Fiori, a veterinarian at Cesimet and coordinator of the event, the objective is to integrate applied research and the needs of producers. “We are presenting a selection of experiments and key results developed by the Secretariat, after a long period of interruption of this type of activity. This moment symbolizes the revitalization of the Center. The technologies and tools demonstrated are specifically aimed at producers in the Campanha region,” he stated.

Fiori reinforced Cesimet's strategic role for the region. “The strength of applied research and innovation lies at the heart of the Pampa. More than a research center, we are a space that integrates producers and the public sector. It's not just a technical event, but an environment for the exchange and construction of knowledge connected to current trends,” he added.

Márcio Amaral, director-general of Seapi, highlighted the importance of reconciling productivity and sustainability. “The challenge is to work in an activity that needs to increase productivity without neglecting environmental issues. Livestock farming is regaining strength in the region, and integrating agriculture and livestock farming is the ideal path,” he said.

Agrometeorology and producer planning

Flávio Varone, coordinator of the Agroclimatic Monitoring and Alert System (Simagro-RS), presented real-time data from 102 meteorological stations in the state. The system allows producers to access information on irrigation, soil moisture, and temperature, both through the website and the free app. “Today we have integrated weather forecasts and agroclimatic data. Producers in Rio Grande do Sul have essential information on their cell phone screens to plan their activities,” explained Varone.

Geovanna Klassen Gielow, an Agronomy student at Urcamp, assessed the learning experience. "The lecture on agrometeorological climate was essential to see in practice the application of what we learned in the classroom," she commented.

Traceability and animal health

Tick control was presented by researcher José Reck Junior, from IPVDF/Seapi. Rio Grande do Sul has been conducting free tests for 40 years to evaluate the effectiveness of acaricides, a unique feature of the state. "The region's climatic conditions favor tick proliferation for much of the year, and resistance to products used in the field is a constant challenge," he said.

Biometric identification of cattle was demonstrated by QR Cattle CEO Flávio Mallmann. The technology allows tracking each animal, recording its georeferenced location, and the length of time spent on each property. “When the animal moves, the system automatically registers this change. The platform should be available to the public starting in January 2026,” he stated.

Furthermore, the event addressed cattle nutrition and reproduction, reinforcing the integration between applied research and the productive needs of the region.
