When the weather speaks louder: the effects of ambiance on milk production

Much more than rain, sun, or wind, the weather dictates the rhythm of livestock farming. Every variation in temperature, the shade available in the pasture, and even the airflow within the pens can be crucial for cow well-being and, consequently, productivity. This relationship between ambiance and animal performance is the focus of the lecture "From Climate to Comfort: How Ambiance Impacts Cows and Productivity," which is part of the program of the 14th Southern Brazil Symposium on Dairy Cattle Farming (SBSBL), sponsored by the Western Center of Veterinarians and Zootechnicians (Nucleovet) and EPAGRI.

On October 14th, at 4:30 pm, Dr. Frederico Márcio Corrêa Vieira, an animal biometeorology specialist, will lead a presentation at the Plínio Arlindo de Nes Culture and Events Center in Chapecó, Santa Catarina. The presentation aims to demonstrate how the environment can be both an ally and a challenge on the path to sustainable dairy farming.

Impact of ambience on dairy farming

In the lecture, Vieira will present how factors related to climate and thermal comfort directly affect the health, well-being, and productivity of dairy cows. Issues such as temperature, ventilation, solar radiation, shading, and facility management will be the focus, demonstrating how the environment can be both a bottleneck and an opportunity to improve production rates.

The professor will also highlight strategies to minimize heat stress, an increasingly relevant topic in light of climate change and the need for more resilient and sustainable systems.

"The lecture, "From Climate to Comfort," reinforces the importance of discussing one of the main factors that limits productive and reproductive potential on dairy farms. Even during the winter months, the southern region presents days with thermal challenges for lactating cows. For the SBSBL organizers, addressing topics such as ambiance demonstrates the event's commitment to providing the public with technical tools to address the current and future challenges of the activity," emphasizes the president of the scientific committee, Claiton André Zotti.

Nucleovet President Tiago Mores adds that, with the contribution of Professor Frederico Vieira, the symposium expands the reflection on how environment and climate shape productivity, reaffirming that animal welfare and productive efficiency go hand in hand.

Specialist in animal biometerology

Frederico Vieira holds a degree in Animal Science from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), a master's degree, and a doctorate in Agricultural Environmental Physics from ESALQ/USP. His academic career has focused on the study of ambiance and welfare in animal production. Since 2013, he has coordinated the Animal Biometeorology Study Group (GEBIOMET) and is currently an adjunct professor at UTFPR – Dois Vizinhos Campus.

With stints as a visiting professor at institutions in Poland and Portugal, the researcher has established himself as a reference in the analysis of interactions between climatic conditions, the environment, and animal performance.

How to participate?

To attend Vieira and the other researchers' presentations, registration for the Southern Brazil Dairy Cattle Symposium is required. Until October 2nd (2nd batch), the investment is R$$ 530.00 for professionals and R$$ 400.00 for students. With this ticket, participants have full access to the event – the 14th SBSBL, 9th Southern Brazil Milk Fair, 4th Southern Brazil Beef Cattle Forum, and the 2nd Santa Catarina Symposium on Pasture-Based Dairy Cattle.

Dr. Frederico Márcio Corrêa Vieira, an animal biometeorology specialist, will lead the session “From climate to comfort: how the environment impacts cows and productivity”

There is also the possibility of participating only in the 4th Brazil South Beef Cattle Forum and the 9th Milk Fair. The prices for this modality are R$1,500,00 until October 2nd, the date that marks the end of the second batch.

To participate only in the 9th Brasil Sul Milk Fair and check out new technologies and solutions presented by companies in the sector, registrations can be made for the price of R$ 50.00, when purchasing in the 2nd batch.

Discounted invitation codes will be awarded to those who purchase packages of ten or more SBSBL registrations. Professionals from agribusinesses, public agencies, and university groups enjoy special conditions.
