Coffee farming is gaining new momentum in Goianésia thanks to a coordinated effort between Emater Goiás and the Goianésia City Hall. On January 30th, 14 rural producers in the municipality benefited from the delivery of coffee seedlings for planting on their properties, totaling 40,000 seedlings distributed.
With technical coordination from Emater Goiás, the initiative involves the municipal government, responsible for acquiring the seedlings and preparing the soil, and the rural producers, who provide the inputs and labor. Emater technicians will monitor all stages of the production process, from planting to harvesting, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and better results in the field.
According to Cleiton Mateus, manager of Agricultural Research at Emater Goiás, the project also has a strategic and scientific character.
“For a long time, technical literature indicated that Goiás did not have ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. With these established areas, we want to demonstrate, in practice, that the state has potential for this activity,” he says.
According to him, the growing international demand, especially from markets like Asia, reinforces the economic viability of the crop.
The proposal foresees expansion. Within approximately one year, producers who demonstrate the best performance may be eligible for a new phase of the project, which includes the distribution of more than 100,000 seedlings. Although the initiative begins at the municipal level, its impact could extend beyond the borders of Goianésia, helping to reposition Goiás on the national coffee-growing map.
Among those benefiting is rural producer Gilmar Xavier, who until now dedicated himself exclusively to livestock farming and is now betting on diversifying production. He has committed to investing in inputs and labor for the cultivation of 4,000 coffee seedlings.
"Expectations are very positive. The idea is to double the planted area and expand production next year," he says.
According to Rafael Gouveia, president of Emater Goiás, the action reaffirms Emater Goiás' commitment to bringing technical assistance, innovation, and knowledge to rural producers.
“By promoting coffee farming in the Cerrado region of Goiás, we are showing that, with proper management and qualified support, it is possible to diversify production, generate income, and open new opportunities for rural families in the state,” he celebrates.
