Heavy rains are expected to hit 13 states across four Brazilian regions this week, according to data released by Meteored. A cold front associated with an extratropical cyclone has moved across the country and is maintaining areas of instability in the South, Southeast, and Midwest, with forecasts of storms in various states.
The largest volumes are expected in Rio Grande do Sul, where accumulated rainfall could exceed 150 mm by the end of Friday (9). There is also a forecast of storms and high volumes in the Southeast, Midwest and North.
According to data released by Meteored, this Tuesday (6), the remainder of the cold front helps to organize a moisture corridor over areas of the Southeast, mainly in São Paulo, Minas Gerais and part of Rio de Janeiro. The moisture channel keeps the atmosphere unstable in the three states and increases the potential for intense rain and storms during the afternoon.
There are warnings for severe storms throughout the state of São Paulo, in Minas Gerais (except for the north and northeast), and in the central and southern parts of Rio de Janeiro.
On Wednesday (7), the rain will be concentrated over Rio de Janeiro, with forecasts of intense rainfall and risk of storms. The same scenario is expected for specific areas of the Triângulo Mineiro region.
On Thursday (8) and Friday (9), the rain loses strength in the Southeast and the alerts cease. Still, São Paulo and western Minas Gerais may register isolated showers.
The highest rainfall totals for the week are expected in eastern Minas Gerais and the central region of Rio de Janeiro, with volumes exceeding 90 mm. According to data released by Meteored, it is important to pay attention to signs of landslides and rising levels in streams and rivers.
In the Southern Region, Paraná and the northern coast of Santa Catarina concentrate the rains this Tuesday (6), with the possibility of heavy precipitation in several places. In other areas, the presence of clouds keeps the weather overcast, with the possibility of light rain.
In the first half of Wednesday (7), the sun may appear in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and southwest Paraná. Afterwards, the trend is for an increase in heavy clouds and a risk of intense rain and storms in the Rio Grande do Sul territory.
Between Thursday (8) and Friday (9), the weather remains cloudy due to the action of a trough, an elongated area of low pressure that should evolve into a cyclone on Saturday (10).
The phenomenon favors the convergence of humid air towards southern Brazil and the formation of storm clouds. According to data released by Meteored, heavy rainfall may affect the northwest and central regions of Rio Grande do Sul, the midwest of Santa Catarina, and the east of Paraná.
By the end of Friday (9), the accumulated rainfall could exceed 150 mm in areas of northwest, west and north Rio Grande do Sul. In Santa Catarina, the volumes should be lower, close to 100 mm in the Chapecó region. Between the east and west of Paraná, the accumulated rainfall could reach close to 90 mm.
Mato Grosso do Sul and southern Goiás should concentrate the largest volumes of rain in the Central-West in the coming days. Mato Grosso will also have precipitation throughout the week, but irregularly and with smaller volumes. This Tuesday (6), alerts for intense rain are concentrated in eastern Mato Grosso do Sul and southern Mato Grosso. In other areas, the sun appears between clouds.
On Wednesday (7), the rains will lose intensity. Areas in southern Goiás and Mato Grosso should only register light rain. On Thursday (8), an area of instability close to Mato Grosso do Sul will increase the occurrence of scattered rain across the state.
On Friday (9), the sun will appear in most of the Central-West. The exception is southern Mato Grosso and all of Mato Grosso do Sul, where the forecast indicates cloudy weather and moderate rain. According to data released by Meteored, accumulations may exceed 50 mm in areas of Mato Grosso do Sul by the end of the week.
In the North, instability dominates the west of Amazonas this Tuesday (6), leaving the region under alert for storms. During the night, the rain area expands towards Acre and the north of Rondônia, increasing the risk zone for storms.
On Wednesday (7), few changes are expected. Rains continue to be concentrated in the west of Amazonas, while Pará, Amapá and Tocantins will have predominantly sunny weather.
On Thursday (8) and Friday (9), the rains move towards Acre and Rondônia, while heavy clouds remain in the west of Amazonas. Isolated instabilities may also appear on the border between Pará and Tocantins.
