Tilapia farming is experiencing one of its best moments in Goiás, which has already established itself as one of the main aquaculture centers in the country. With an accelerated pace of expansion, the state saw production of the species exceed 23,000 tons in 2024, according to the Brazilian Association of Fish Farming (PeixeBR). This volume represents more than 75% of all fish cultivated in Goiás, confirming the widespread preference of producers and industries for tilapia.
The dominance of this species is no accident. Tilapia responds well to the local climate, performs efficiently in net pens, and meets the growing demand from processing plants, which supply both the domestic market and export operations. Other categories of farmed fish, such as tambaqui, tambacu, and tambatinga, remain relevant, totaling more than seven thousand tons, but without threatening tilapia's leadership. There are also species such as pangasius, carp, and trout, which maintain a modest but stable share.
The strength of the activity is concentrated in specific centers. Niquelândia continues to drive state production, followed by Inaciolândia, which is advancing consistently, and Quirinópolis, a reference point in the Southwest of Goiás. Together, these regions account for a significant share of the total volume and boost the installation of industries, job creation, and economic activity in their municipalities.
The impact of fish farming goes beyond the farms themselves. The chain involves everyone from rural workers and transporters to specialized processing plants that supply retail chains and government programs. Tilapia has also gained prominence in public policies, such as the Food Acquisition Program (PAA), which has expanded institutional purchases of the species and strengthened small and medium-sized producers.
With less land required and good profitability per hectare, the activity has attracted livestock farmers and agricultural producers seeking to diversify production. Thus, fish farming is consolidating itself as a strategic segment of Goiás' agribusiness, combining technology, a strong market, and growth potential for the coming years.
