Climate impacts crop development in the 2024/25 harvest

Monitoring of summer and winter crops indicates that climate variations continue to directly influence the development of crops in the 2024/25 harvest. The Agricultural Monitoring Bulletin, published by the National Supply Company (Conab) this week, referring to the conditions observed from May 1 to 21, reveals that no significant rainfall was recorded in areas of the Southeast and Central-West, which reduced soil moisture in these regions. Despite this, spectral data indicate favorable conditions for the second corn crop in the main producing states.

According to the Bulletin, in the Matopiba region, rainfall volumes were only recorded at the beginning of the month, but the moisture still available has been sufficient to sustain crop development. In Tocantins, for example, the reduction in rainfall has contributed to the maturation of corn, whose harvest is expected to begin in June, with good productivity prospects. In Paraná, irregular rainfall has harmed production potential in several areas.

The highest rainfall volumes were concentrated in the northern part of the North Region, in Rio Grande do Sul and in the eastern strip of the Northeast, benefiting the beginning of the development of beans and third-crop corn in the Sealba region. The index of the current harvest, for most of the cycle, exceeded the average and the results of the previous season, reflecting the more stable climate and the smaller staggering of planting. Currently, there is a drop in this index due to the reduction of rainfall and the advance of crop maturation.
