Tilapia sustains the growth of fish farming in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Fish farming in Mato Grosso do Sul registered moderate growth in 2025. Production reached 40,620 tons of farmed fish, a volume 0.30% higher compared to the previous year, when 40,500 tons were produced.

Tilapia remains the main farmed species in the state, accounting for the majority of the volume produced. However, the share of native species is still small, a scenario that reflects the predominant production profile on the farms.

According to data from the Brazilian Aquaculture Yearbook PeixeBR 2026, the positive results of the activity are mainly attributed to fiscal initiatives, logistical improvements, and the adoption of modern technologies, which have contributed to strengthening the production chain.

Even with this progress, experts believe the sector still has significant growth potential, especially with the expansion of native species cultivation and the incorporation of small and medium-sized producers into the activity. These initiatives can broaden production diversity and boost the development of fish farming in the state.
