The 2025 Corn Seed Project is now in effect. This is one of the main actions of the Terra Boa Program, aimed at strengthening family farming. This year, the project will have an increase of 27.5% compared to the amount applied in 2024. The launch event was held by the State Government in Maravilha, in the Far West, as part of the program for the 2nd edition of Santa Catarina Levada a Sério: Prestando Contas in the Amerios region.
The ceremony was attended by Governor Jorginho Mello and the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Chiodini, regional and state leaders, representatives of cooperatives, farmers and technicians.
The Corn Seeds Project will ensure the distribution of 170,000 bags of high genetic value corn seeds in 2025, benefiting more than 42,500 farming families in all municipalities in Santa Catarina. The project is being implemented through a cooperation agreement between the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAR) and the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Santa Catarina (Fecoagro). The planned investment is R$1,500,000,000, out of a total amount of over R$1,160,000,000 earmarked for the Terra Boa Program this year.
“Support policies are reaching producers directly. We want to guarantee productivity, income and quality of life in the countryside. Agriculture is one of Santa Catarina’s greatest strengths, and our government will continue to invest in strengthening this sector that feeds Brazil and the world,” highlighted Governor Jorginho Mello.
The seeds offered include different technological levels, with subsidies ranging from R$100 to R$240 per bag, depending on the type. Each family may withdraw up to five bags per year. These seeds are intended for the production of grains for the meat and silage chains for dairy farming. Farmers can now contact Epagri to obtain authorization and then contact accredited cooperatives or agricultural companies to formalize the partnership project.
“The Corn Seeds Project is strategic to ensure the competitiveness of Santa Catarina’s agriculture. With quality genetics, producers harvest more, with less risk and greater returns. This project also contributes to reducing the deficit in corn production. It is yet another action that reaffirms the state’s commitment to the sustainable development of Santa Catarina’s rural environment,” says Secretary Carlos Chiodini.
In addition to the announcement of the 2025 Corn Seeds Project, terms were also signed to release resources from the Água no Campo SC and Leite Bom SC Programs.
Good Land Program
The Terra Boa Program, created in 1983, is one of the most traditional programs of the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock. It also includes actions in the areas of soil correction with limestone, forage kits, beekeeping, soil health, selected queen bees and incentives for winter cereals.
Corn production
Corn cultivation plays a fundamental role in agricultural production in Santa Catarina, providing food for both people and animals, contributing to the diversification and sustainability of agribusiness and boosting the local and state economy.
In the 2024/2025 harvest, 291.1 thousand hectares of corn were cultivated in the State, with a production of 2.73 million tons. According to Epagri/Cepa, even with a reduction in the cultivation area of more than 13%, the 2024/2025 harvest presented a production 23% higher compared to the 2023/24 harvest.
