The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Goiás registered growth of 4.81% in 2023, above the Brazilian average of 3.21%, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and analyzed by the Mauro Borges Institute (IMB). In current values, the state economy reached R$ 336.7 billion, maintaining Goiás as the ninth largest economy in the country and the second largest in the Central-West region, with a 2% share of the region's total.
According to the Secretary-General of the Government, Adriano da Rocha Lima, the result confirms the maturation of the Goiás economy. “This growth above the national average shows that Goiás has consolidated a favorable, innovative, and competitive business environment. It is a state that diversifies, invests in infrastructure, reduces obstacles, and provides security for investors. The 2023 performance is a direct reflection of this strategy and the integrated work to strengthen all productive sectors,” he states.
The Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Services, Joel de Sant'Anna Braga Filho, also highlights the strengthening of the Goiás economy. “Goiás is experiencing a solid cycle of expansion because it works with planning, responsibility, and dialogue with the productive sector. The results of 2023 show that the state is on the right track, attracting investments, expanding industrialization, and generating opportunities for the population,” he points out.
Agriculture is highlighted.
The positive performance reflects the simultaneous expansion of the three major productive sectors. Agriculture was the highlight of the year, with a significant increase of 15.11% in volume, driven by the rise in the production of soybeans, corn, and sugarcane. Corn grew by 35%, soybeans by 14.4%, and sugarcane by 11%, securing the state's leading national position. Goiás is the largest Brazilian producer of sunflower, sorghum, and tomatoes, the second largest producer of garlic, and the third largest producer of soybeans, corn, and sugarcane.
Industry grows 3.6%
The industrial sector in Goiás also showed significant growth, with an increase of 3.61% per quarter. The largest contributions came from the electricity, water, gas, and sanitation sectors, which registered an increase of 7.11% per quarter, and from the manufacturing industry, with an advance of 4.71% per quarter. In current values, the industrial sector totaled R$ 66.8 billion.
In the service sector, responsible for more than 60% of the Goian economy, growth was 2.5%, with notable increases in information and communication activities, which grew by 8%; private education and health, with a rise of 7.6%; and financial and insurance activities, with 7.3%. Transportation and storage, as well as professional, scientific, and technical activities, also saw significant advances, reinforcing the diversification of the state economy and its dynamism in areas of higher added value.
The economy of Goiás represents 291% of the GDP of the Central-West region.
Goiás' GDP per capita reached R$$ 47,721, maintaining the state in 11th position nationally. Within the Central-West region, Goiás remains the second largest economy, behind only the Federal District. Between 2021 and 2023, the state accumulated an average growth of 4.1% in volume, above that recorded in Brazil during the same period, which was 3.7%. Since 2010, the Goiás economy has more than tripled in current values, demonstrating solidity and continuity in its expansion rate.
