Participation of steers in slaughter in Mato Grosso reaches historic record in September, says IMEA

The month of September brought a historic milestone for Mato Grosso's livestock industry: the share of steers in the total number of males slaughtered was the highest in the historical series, according to data from the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (IMEA).

In total, Mato Grosso recorded the slaughter of 656.31 thousand heads of cattle, a slight decrease of 0.67% compared to August, but with emphasis on the volume of males, which represented 55.97% of the total, the highest percentage in the last 11 months.

By category, steers (aged 12 to 24 months) accounted for 59,83% of the total male slaughtered, totaling 219,780 head, the second-highest volume ever recorded. This significant increase reflects the increase in the confinement of young males, a strategy adopted by livestock farmers to take advantage of the favorable price situation and strong industry demand.

Despite the increase in supply, the price of fed cattle remained firm in September, supported mainly by strong external demand. Beef exports remain high, helping to balance the market even with the influx of animals finished in feedlots.

For the fourth quarter of 2025, IMEA projects stable prices, but warns that the high slaughter of young males could reduce the supply of ready animals in the medium term, which adds an upward bias to prices in the coming months.

At the current pace, Mato Grosso remains one of the main slaughter centers in the country, consolidating its importance for the beef production chain, and reinforcing the trend of intensifying production through confinement and slaughter of younger animals.

Regarding the prices of live cattle, the institute highlighted that the price of live cattle on a forward basis fell 0.59% last week, as a result of the greater supply of finished animals for industries, being quoted on average at R$ 293.26/@.

“The wholesale value of beef carcasses increased by 0.83% last week, averaging R$ 20.90/kg, as a result of increased demand in the domestic market,” reported IMEA.

Last week, the price of a single cow of 10.5@ averaged R$ 278.39/@, a drop of 0.65% between the weeks, caused by the greater supply in the category.

Increased price appreciation and increased slaughter boost livestock GVP in Mato Grosso

The Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) released, this week, the fourth projection of the Gross Production Value (VBP) of Mato Grosso for 2025, which should reach R$ 212.29 billion, an increase of 22.75% in relation to the previous year.

Livestock, comprised of beef cattle, poultry, swine, and dairy farming, accounts for a significant portion of this result. The sector is expected to generate R$44.22 billion in revenue in 2020, a R$24.5 billion increase compared to 2024.

Within this group, beef cattle farming stands out as the main driver of growth, with a forecast of R$39.77 billion in 2020, representing an increase of R$28,051 million compared to last year. This impressive performance is supported by the appreciation of the price of beef cattle, which averaged R$45,361 million between January and September, and by the higher slaughter volume recorded in the state throughout the year.

According to Imea, this scenario reflects both strong external demand for Brazilian beef and the increased use of feedlots, which has increased productivity and shortened the fattening cycle. The combination of firm prices and a fast slaughter rate has ensured a positive year for Mato Grosso's livestock sector, solidifying the state as one of the largest beef producers and exporters in the country.
